How can we draw a parabola or hyperbola mechanically?
We can draw ellipse mechanically by fixing two nails , joined by a thread with fixing a pencil and rotate. The property
:sum of focal distances = 2.a.
It's not as simple as a sum of values.
With a sum of values, they are always below a certain value that doesn't change, meaning you can use a constant amount of string.
Parabolas are equidistant from a certain point (focus) and a line. However, though these distances are equal to each other, the distance itself changes with every point. So if you had some kind of weight rigged up to let string out at only the same rate, you could draw one.
Hyperbolas have a constants difference from two points, which means you would have to let in string from one source and out from another source at the same time.
It's not impossible, but it requires some awkward kind of weight and pully system or some similar system.
Alternatively, you could draw lines connecting many points , and the more you make, the closer it comes to a parabola.

It's a fun thing to do if nothing else.
Basically, this draws lots of tangent lines of a parabola , and since those tangent lines don't cross each other, as a parabola has only one curve, it draws a very nice parabolic curve on the inside.
The same thing can be done with hyperbolas if you avoid overlapping between the two curves (or only desire half).
